In the book Being and nothingness, the French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Satre introduces us to a concept that he believed is holding people back. Mauvaise foi, translating to bad faith. It occurs in a person when they use self-deception and deny their own freedom, to convince us of things we don’t really believe in order to avoid taking responsibility, to spare themselves from short term pain.
What Does Mauvaise Foi Look Like?
Waiting for "The Perfect Time": Telling yourself, "I’d start my business if only I had more experience" or "I’d travel if only I had more money." This mindset tricks you into believing external circumstances are the sole reason you’re not pursuing your goals.
Blaming Circumstances: “I’d love to write more, but my job is just too demanding.” While obligations are real, they can also become an excuse not to prioritize what really matters.
Relying on “Signs”: Interpreting every obstacle as a sign to give up can be a subtle way of surrendering control. For instance, thinking, “This isn’t the right time because X happened” might just be a way to justify staying in your comfort zone.
How to get rid of limiting beliefs in Three Practical Steps
Challenge Excuses: Ask yourself, "Is this a reason or an excuse?" By examining your motivations, you’ll begin to see the difference between real limitations and self-imposed ones.
Focus on What’s Within Your Control: List actions you can take, no matter how small, to move closer to your goals. Taking responsibility empowers you and gives you back a sense of freedom.
Set Small, Honest Goals: Start with manageable steps that don’t require “ideal” circumstances. For instance, if you want to write, commit to 10 minutes a day instead of waiting for hours of free time. Progress, even in small amounts, reinforces that you’re capable of taking control.
Everything you wish to be, but currently aren’t. Is possible if you accept responsibility, discard bad faith and be in control of your own destiny.
