The power of “I am…” - Self-fulfilling prophecies

Updated: Feb 14

We often underestimate the power of our statements. Particularly the power of “I am…” statements. These declarations can reshape your life. Muhammed Ali used to say “I am the greatest… “ he added to that “I said that even before I knew I was.”

Robert Mertan coined the term  Self-fulfilling prophecies, explaining how beliefs and expectations (even if they are initially false) can influence behaviour and outcomes. If someone constantly tells themselves “I am bad at public speaking/social interactions” they may unconsciously avoid opportunities to practice and develop their skill, conversely adopting the “I am confident when I speak” can help create a mindset that encourages improvement.

Carol Dweck explored this idea through her research on fixed vs growth mindsets. Saying “ I am capable of growth” cultivates resilience and will embraces learning opportunities, while saying “ I am stuck” will shut down potential.

That is why we must be careful when choosing our words and when we have a choice of believing in ourselves or not. Always back yourself, because even if you don’t believe it, allowing yourself to say it will spark your body to believe, With repetition, the belief will get stronger and stronger.

Self-fulfilling prophecies, Identity and Behaviour

In the book Atomic Habits, James Clear emphasizes the role identity has in shaping behavior.. Instead of stating “i want to write a book” declare “ I am a writer”. This will encourage you to carry out behavior aligned with being a writer.

If your someone who engages in negative self-talk, you can undertake a process called cognitive restructuring, by repeating positive affirmations like “I am strong” or “ I am capable” can counteract negative self-take, improve your self-esteem and reduce anxiety.

“I am…” In Goal-setting

I have spoken previously about Kyrie Irving’s declaration, when he wrote on his desk “ I am going to the NBA, I promise. This is something that is also present in One Piece, every episode, Luffy will proudly exclaim “ I am going to be king of the pirates” to anyone who will listen. It’s part of his identity. Similarly we can all follow that and declare your goals in a similar manner.

Nietzche’s idea of self-overcoming and becoming an ubermensch, can tie into this. Your “I am…” is a declaration of the person that you are striving to become. By phrasing it with I am, you increase belief and accountability, both necessary if you want to achieve your dream.

There’s no dream too big, no challenge too daunting, when you believe in who you are and who you are becoming. The power of 'I am' is already within you—declare it, embody it, and watch as the world aligns with your belief.
