Embracing Stillness in 2023
In 2023 - [Read here - Untitled 2023], I took a moment to avoid distraction. I chose to sit and be present. I’ve never really been one for meditation, but I could always sit and daydream while taking in the world around me.
This time, I decided to sit in my garden. I wanted to enjoy the final hours of sunshine for the day. No devices, no music, no distractions—just me and the uninspiring view from my garden. I faced a crooked fence and a fallen tree in the garden behind me. There was no real view to speak of. The sounds of summer filled the air: children playing somewhere out of sight and sirens blaring.
Just like before, feelings of discomfort and a craving for stimulation cried out to me. Then, a sudden breeze washed over my skin, replacing those feelings with peace and comfort.

A plane flew by overhead, prompting me to tilt my head back. I stared at it as it soared into and then out of sight against the golden hour sky. Not long after, a bird flew by, matching its path. The sky, the breeze, and the birdsong relaxed my mind. Soon, I could clearly see my thoughts. I reflected on how far I’ve grown in the last two years and the work I’ve put into my writing and design.
The leap I’ve taken with the YouTube channel hasn’t all gone to plan. There are still things I wish to improve. What was a complete mess just 5-10 minutes ago now felt clear. My mind was at ease—no judgment, no forcing, no overthinking. I was just observing, taking in the fresh air, the breeze, and the peace.
The Freedom of Being Present
Again, I felt free like the wind. I experienced hope, which for me is the essence of life itself. When you allow yourself to sit still and fight through discomfort, you can feel light and free. Observing the beauty in the world—the things you don’t notice but are present every day—helps you understand that the problems worrying you aren’t so bad. And maybe, just maybe, everything will be alright.
What started as a reminder to myself could also benefit you. Take some time to breathe a little.
The Importance of Mindfulness
Mindfulness is about being present in the moment. It allows us to connect with our surroundings and ourselves. By taking a break from our busy lives, we can gain clarity and perspective.
Benefits of Mindfulness
Reduces Stress: Mindfulness helps lower stress levels. When you focus on the present, you can let go of worries about the past or future.
Enhances Focus: Practicing mindfulness can improve your concentration. It trains your brain to focus on one thing at a time.
Improves Emotional Health: Mindfulness can lead to a better mood and emotional resilience. It allows you to process your feelings without judgment.
How to Practice Mindfulness
Start Small: Begin with just a few minutes each day. Gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable.
Find a Quiet Space: Choose a peaceful location where you won’t be disturbed. This could be your garden, a park, or even a quiet room in your home.
Focus on Your Breath: Pay attention to your breathing. Inhale deeply and exhale slowly. This simple act can ground you in the present moment.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Taking a moment to pause and reflect can make a significant difference. I encourage you to find your own space of stillness. Embrace the beauty around you and within you.
Remember, the act of sitting quietly can open doors to new perspectives. It can help you appreciate the little things that often go unnoticed. So, take a moment to breathe, and allow yourself to be present.
