As Artists we desperately search for uniqueness in our identity, our process and our art.
Of course this is a noble pursuit however it’s a little misguided, since. It’ll always be more meaningful to be authentically you.
Individuality is the essence of you - the way you think, the things that ignite passion in you, your goals, the detail in a film that you’re obsessed with and that nobody else even notices.
These are all the little pieces that when put together make you…you.
You take that and produce something that has you in it.. It’s scary, in fact it’s terrifying to put yourself out there. It’s natural as you want to protect yourself from harsh judgements and criticism.
But your job as an artist is to create just for you. Not anyone else. So if you like it, you can put it out and if others love it, that’s great, and if not that’s fine.
Alfred Adler talks about the separation of tasks. We must know our tasks and how they differ from the tasks of others.
As artists our task is to create a work for ourselves. It is not our task to worry about how others will see it.
It’s a difficult thing to put into practice, but with more practice it will become a little bit easier.
Your individuality isn’t shaped by one-off actions. It’s the product of your thoughts and habits—the consistent ways you approach life.
Just like an artist doesn’t start from scratch every time they create, they draw from their internal framework: their mindset, perspective, and routines.
Thoughts: The Seed of Individuality
Your thoughts shape your worldview. They inform how you perceive challenges and opportunities, influencing your creative output. When you cultivate a mindset that values curiosity and openness, you allow space for new ideas to flourish.
Embrace the little details that captivate you—those obsessions that others might overlook. These thoughts become the foundation of your individuality, adding depth to your creations.
Tip: Take a moment each day to reflect on your thoughts. Consider journaling about what sparks your interest or what ideas inspire you. This practice can help you unearth the unique perspectives that form the core of your individuality.
Habits: The Building Blocks of Your Framework
The key is to cultivate habits that align with your values and support your creative pursuits. Instead of forcing yourself into a rigid schedule, create flexible habits that allow for exploration and experimentation.
For example, if you’re an artist, establish a habit of sketching daily. This doesn’t mean you have to create a masterpiece each time; the goal is to keep the creative juices flowing without the pressure of perfection. These habits can lead to unexpected insights and creative breakthroughs.
Tip: Identify one or two habits that align with your creative goals and incorporate them into your daily routine. Remember, consistency is key, but allow yourself the flexibility to adapt as needed.
