The writer

I've always wanted to write a story, something deep and powerful. Something

infectious. But nothing comes easy in life, and writing is on that endless list.

The ideas are the easiest part, imagining a scene that is incredible in your head or

intriguing plot that you will struggle to complete. Those come often.

Working on those ideas, leads to hours of boredom, notes inevitably crossed out and

hours, maybe even days or weeks passing with nothing to show for it. And most of the

time, it all leads no where

To be a writer I have to be persistent, continuously working on completing the

puzzle that is the story. No matter how long it takes.

It's already taken a long time and it's going to take a lot more. Over the years I have gotten better. But it simply made me a great mountain climber, who has never climbed a mountain.

And I can't stop until I've done it.

THE BLOCK

I've faced many challenges over my writing journey. Any journey that's worth it always has challenges. The biggest challenge is not always the toughest but the one the most frequent. And this challenge is always dangerously close, no matter how many times you beat it. It could always come back. It will always come back. Because a writers path is not straight and narrow, its mostly unknown and when undertaking the path, you get hit with the Block.

Writers Block is something every writer has struggled with, but everyone goes against a different version of the block.

For me, I had so many things going on in my head. I would spend my time, searching for something.

An idea.

A character.

Anything.

But there was nothing of use.

Hours wasted, staring at my laptop screen. That frustrating blank page, just trying to write something.

But finding a way out of the block is like finding a way out of a maze. You go in one direction and think you are finally get somewhere. Some words are finally being written down. The excitement builds, you feel like you're getting somewhere.

Just to hit a dead end. That built up excitement for a single paragraph that leads you nowhere.

It makes you more desperate to get out of the block and that desperation keeps you blocked for much longer.

Finding some distance will do you more good than diving in deeper. You don't want to drown, maybe you'll be calmer in shallow waters, just floating with an empty mind. Going for a walk is known to help get the creative juices going. Having optimism about getting through will always help. Worrying leads to more desperation.

Staying optimistic, keeping your mind present and open is essential.

This is just a few of the many things you can do to escape the block.

And all you really need to escape the block is that one moment. Of realization. That one idea.

That one spark that changes everything. That leads to something so much more.

What makes the small spark so special is that it can be absolutely. One small bit of information can unlock a treasure trove of ideas. From themes to scenes to quotes.

You can look at a painting and write an insightful piece about nature.

You can hear someone say one sentence and come up with a whole idea for a film.

What worked for me…was a single image.

THE SPARK

I was walking to work one day and had tried to distract myself from the lack of ideas I had or the lack of words I wrote.

As I was walking, I had thought about different I had already, thinking I might take something new from a film I already watched and loved.

Turns out, I didn't need to see the film.

I had gone through a whole list of gangster flicks, fantasy epics and detective films when my mind took a path to Korean films, and after remembering Oldboy was one of the best I've ever seen. My mind came to Parasite. I did not think about the themes of the film and the sudden genre change that kept me gripped. I thought of a single shot. The Main character standing in front of the window of the semi basement apartment him and his family lived in.

Elderly person gazes from behind barred window, wooden frame visible. Outside, concrete ground with sparse grass. Somber mood.
Parasite - The shot that brought the spark

That picture entered my mind and gave me so many questions.

- What could they see from that window?

- What kind of society would force people to live like that?

- What if the window wasn’t just a view but a portal to something greater?

Such a simple question, made my mind work.

By the time I got to work that day. An idea formed in my mind.

I was thinking about it all day.

Until I had a scene in my head...

The Unreal Robbery

“This was the day that the wretched emperor, Neville De Bastion, had set off the fatal explosion that blew up the capital city, River City, wiping it out of existence, killing himself and the 400,000 that resided within it-” Sam, a tall young man, had paused the TV, at the point where the screen showed a map of the world, with only one land large piece of land along with a two small islands next to it, surrounded by the ocean.

Sam leaned forward on the grey sofa in the small below ground apartment, his green eyes fixed on the map on the TV screen. “There's gotta be more to the world than this, right? Sam said, looking right at Kai who sat at the only other chair in the room, reading a book. Kai closed the book but kept a finger on the page he was reading. He looked at the TV and shook his head. “how many times are you gonna watch this?” Kai questioned.

“We don't have anything else!”

“Well do something else then.”

“Like what?”

“Get a job.”

“Spend my time getting told what to do to earn a barely livable wage? No thanks.”

“Well then travel. Find out if there is more to the world instead complaining and making conspiracy theories at home all the time.”

“...how would I go about doing that? I've never left New River City?”

“What kind of question is that? Just do it. Figure it out as you go along.”

“I'm not sure. Natalie lives here.”

“Natalie? She hasn't dumped you yet?”

“What do you mean? Of course she hasn't”

“Hey. Let's not act like she's not wayyy out your league.”

Before Sam could reply, the front door opened and in walked Joseph with a tray of food.

“Hey guys. What's going on?” Joseph spoke Softly as he usually did.

“Watching what I usually watch. Questioning everything like I usually do and Kai's hating on me, like he usually does.” Sam said.

“Hey. You can't tell me you expected him and Natalie to still be together.” Kai said to Joseph, who took off his shoes and moved to sit next to Sam, putting the food tray down.

“Natalie. You guys not married yet?”

“Thank you! I'm working on it.” Sam smiled.

“Oh come on! You can't let this naive idiot give you delusions.” Kai said, putting his book down.

“it's not naivety. I know what the world's like. And Sam and Natalie will not let it stop em.”

“Ridiculous.”

“Well I think that's nice. I appreciate it Jo.” Sam said.

“It's Joseph.”

“Oh right. I forgot.”

“Alright besties. How about we just eat in silence like usual? Kai moved his chair near the table and spoke.

Sam, ignoring, pressed play on the TV and continued watching the history show. Kai rolled his eyes and dug into his food.

“So what conspiracies have come up with today?” Joseph asked.

“It's hot in here.” Kai mumbled, as he got up to open the window that is just above ground outside.

“Well, I was thinking this Bastion guy. Y'know the evil emperor who killed millions and like 4000000 in his final act. What if its not the truth? What if he was framed. Because I remember Kai telling me in a book-”

“Shhh. Have you ever seen this guy before?”

Joseph and Sam stood and turned to look out the window.

They saw a man walking through the alleyway, smartly dressed, something they had never seen since their younger years, when they were in the schooling program.

“No. Actually, I've never seen anyone like him around here.”

“Well he's a dumbass, walking around here dressed like that.”

Not long after Kai spoke, two masked men came up behind the man and took out their guns aiming it at the man.

“Stop! And put your hands up. If you move, we will shoot.” one of the robbers demanded.

The smartly dressed man seemed very calm as he slowly turned around and put his hands in the air.

“Good. Now my friend here is gonna go through your pockets and take out anything of value.” The spokesman of the robbers signaled to his friend to go ahead, the friend silently obeyed, walking over to the calm man.

“You pocked the wrong man to steal from today.i don't have anything of value for you.”

“We’ll be the judge of that.”

Inside the apartment, the three roommates watched on in surprise. Not sure what to do but watch. Until Joseph spoke.

“We have to help him.”

“How are you gonna do? The Creator won't help you against a gun.” Kai protested.

“We have the element of surprise against them. We have to do something.”

I don't think we need to.” Sam said and added “look.”

Kai and Joseph take another look to see the silent robber walking towards the calm man, who swiftly and skillfully grabbed him, kicked his gun away and turned him around to use as a shield. The other robber aimed his gun.

“You made a mistake. I told you I had nothing and you didn't listen.”

“And I said. We’ll be the judge of that. I've still got my gun and I'm a pretty good.”

“Not as good as me.” The calm said as he put his hands in his pocket before taking it out having removed nothing from his pocket.

He followed that action by using his fingers as a gun and putting it to the captured robbers head.

“Seriously? Look at that Joseph. You wanted to help an asylum escapee.” Kai said from inside, now entertained to see how the situation turned out. Joseph was still worried.

Outside, the spokesman robber laughed hard. “Oh my God hahaha. I can't believe I thought you were gonna do something.” He exclaimed.

“You have seconds to drop your gun or else he's dead.”

“Oh piss off. How deluded can you be? You really think I'm gonna listen to you? Go ahead. Let's see what you got.”

The calm man begun counting down. Inside they all watched. Sam seemed focused on the quiet robber, who was sweating profusely and shaking. Kai was amused and Joseph was still worried.

“Bang” said the calm man and what seemed to be an invisible went through the quiet robbers head.

He fell to the ground.

Before the spokesman had a chance to react. The calm man aimed his fingers at him “Bang” and this time, the invisible bullet hit the robbers hand and yelled in pain, dropping his gun.

Blood had come out of the finger of the calm man but he was unaffected by it.

“Hold on. I'm sorry. I-”

“Save it. I warned you. And you didnt listen. Now you can't live because someone who knows about me puts me in a dangerous situation. So you have to die. I apologise.”

“Wait!”

“Bang” The spokesman was hit on the head and fell back to the ground, dead.

The calm man's finger blew up and blood started pouring out. This was the first time the man looked like he was in pain.

The three roommates stared and situation in shock, mouth agape.

Then he turned to the window where the three roommates were watching.

“Hide!” Kai said.

And at the same time, all three dived away from the window, making sure they cannot be seen

The calm man looked inside, and then at his messed up finger, feeling the pain. He took out a piece of paper from his pocket and pen. He wrote something down and stuck it on the window with an unknown substance. Then he rushed out of the alleyway.

After waiting for a few moments. Kai looked toward the window and saw he was gone.

“He's gone…”

Sam and Joseph near each other stood up.

“What the hell was that?” Sam asked.

“I don't know…” Joseph replied, deep in thought.

“He knew we were watching. Look at this.” Kai said, looking at the window.

Joseph and Sam joined Kai, standing next to him, they saw the message the man had sent.

It read:

“If you talk, I'll know… So you saw nothing.”

Two men face off in an alley. One points with glowing fingers, emitting green light, as the other holds a cigarette. Tense atmosphere.
